UPSC to Release Provisional Answer Keys Soon After Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026

The Union Public Service Commission has introduced a major reform in the Civil Services Examination process by deciding to release provisional answer keys shortly after the Preliminary Examination 2026. The initiative is aimed at increasing transparency, improving accountability, and reducing legal disputes related to evaluation and recruitment procedures.

Major Highlights

  • The Union Public Service Commission conducted the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 on May 17, 2026, across 77 examination centres throughout the country.
  • For the first time in UPSC’s history, provisional answer keys for General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II will be released within three days of the examination.
  • Candidates will be provided a seven-day period to submit online objections or representations regarding the provisional answer keys through the official UPSC portal.
  • According to reports, the reform follows several judicial observations emphasizing the need for greater transparency and fairness in the civil services recruitment process.
  • Earlier, UPSC used to release official answer keys only after publication of the final merit list, which generally occurred nearly a year after the preliminary examination.
  • The new system includes an automated digital feedback mechanism to process a large number of candidate objections and representations efficiently.
  • A specialized expert committee will review all valid objections submitted by candidates before the final answer keys are approved for evaluation of OMR answer sheets.
  • Nearly 13 lakh candidates reportedly appeared for the Preliminary Examination 2026, competing for approximately 1,050 vacancies in the IAS, IPS, IFS, and other central civil services.
  • The initiative forms part of UPSC’s broader digital transformation and administrative modernization strategy aimed at reducing delays in the recruitment cycle.
  • The Commission clarified that final results of the Preliminary Examination will be prepared only after all objections and challenges related to the provisional answer keys are examined and resolved.
