What is the UPSC Civil Services Examination?
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is a three-stage selection process conducted by the Union Public Service Commission:
01. Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC CSE.
It consists of two objective-type papers:
- General Studies Paper I
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT)
General Studies Paper I determines qualification for the Mains stage, while CSAT is qualifying in nature.
The Preliminary Examination is primarily designed to screen candidates for the next stage.
02. Civil Services Main Examination
Candidates who qualify for the Preliminary Examination appear for the Main Examination.
The Mains is a written examination consisting of multiple descriptive papers, including:

03. Personality Test
Candidates shortlisted after the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test/Interview conducted by the UPSC.
The interview assesses various aspects of a candidate’s personality, including:

- Judgement and reasoning
- Leadership qualities
- Intellectual curiosity
- Balance of opinion
- Communication and interpersonal abilities

The final ranking is prepared on the basis of performance in the Mains written examination and Personality Test, subject to the applicable UPSC rules.
