Vraj Iron and Steel Launches New Integrated Facility to Boost Chhattisgarh Operations. – News on Projects

In a major development for the industrial landscape of central India, Vraj Iron and Steel Limited has officially commenced commercial operations at its newly expanded integrated steel facility in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The commissioning of this state-of-the-art expansion project represents a strategic move to scale up the company’s production of sponge iron, steel billets, and captive power. This development aligns with India’s broader push to enhance domestic steel manufacturing capacities and positions Chhattisgarh as a critical hub for high-value metallurgical manufacturing.

Core Highlights and Capacity Expansion

The newly operational integrated facility in Bilaspur is designed to streamline the manufacturing process by bringing multiple stages of steel production under one roof. The expansion project significantly boosts the company’s annual output, introducing an additional production capacity of 1,15,500 Tonnes Per Annum (TPA) of Sponge Iron. Alongside the sponge iron unit, the facility features an expanded steel melt shop and rolling mill capacities, enabling the direct conversion of raw materials into finished and semi-finished steel products like billets and structural steel.

A key feature of the integrated plant is the commissioning of a 15 MW captive power plant. Of this total capacity, a substantial portion is generated through a Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS), which captures hot flue gases emitted during the sponge iron manufacturing process to generate electricity. This dual-source power setup ensures a highly reliable and cost-effective energy supply, reducing the facility’s dependence on the state grid and lowering overall operational expenses.

Technological Integration and Resource Efficiency

The integration of the Bilaspur facility is built on modern metallurgical technologies aimed at optimizing material yields and lowering environmental footprints. By utilizing a Waste Heat Recovery System, Vraj Iron and Steel is adopting circular economy principles. The system not only generates clean energy from industrial waste gases but also significantly mitigates the thermal pollution typically associated with heavy steel manufacturing.
