The conclusion is the main point, claim, or thesis that the author attempts to prove using those premises. It is the destination of the logical journey. Connecting these two is the assumption—the unstated, implicit link that must be true for the premises to successfully support the conclusion.

Instead, you must train your eyes to scan for structural indicators or signpost words. These words act as logical roadmaps, signaling whether the author is presenting a factual basis or drawing a final deduction.

Premise Indicators: These words introduce evidence, reasons, or background data. When you see these, the author is establishing the groundwork of their argument.

  • Given that / On the grounds that (e.g., “Given that inflation has crossed 6%…”)

Conclusion Indicators: These words introduce claims, assertions, or final deductions. They signal that the author is wrapping up their thoughts or making a recommendation based on the preceding premises.

3. Inference vs. Assumption: The Crucial Distinction

One of the most common traps set by examiners in UPSC CSAT and SSC comprehension sections is confusing an inference with an assumption. Both deal with unstated information, but they occupy completely different positions in the logical timeline of an argument.

An assumption is a prerequisite that occurs before or during the formulation of the argument. It is the silent pillar upon which the conclusion rests. If you falsify the assumption, the entire argument collapses. To test if an option is a valid assumption, use the Negation Technique: negate the option (make it opposite) and see if the conclusion still holds. If the conclusion fails, that option is indeed a necessary assumption.

An inference, on the other hand, is a logical consequence that flows after the argument. It is a conclusion that can be drawn with absolute certainty from the facts provided in the passage. An inference is not stated explicitly, but it must be 100% true based on the given text. Unlike assumptions, inferences do not support the argument; rather, they are supported by the argument.

4. Common Logical Fallacies in Reading Comprehension

To evaluate arguments effectively, you must be able to spot logical fallacies—flaws in reasoning that weaken or invalidate an argument. Examiners frequently construct incorrect answer options based on these common fallacies.

Correlation vs. Causation (Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc): This fallacy occurs when an author assumes that because event B followed event A, event A must have caused event B. For example: “After the new education policy was implemented, literacy rates rose. Therefore, the policy caused the rise.” While it may have contributed, other factors like NGO initiatives or digital access might have been the actual drivers.

Hasty Generalization: Drawing a sweeping conclusion based on an inadequate or non-representative sample size. For instance, concluding that an entire nation’s public health system is a failure based on the poor performance of a single rural clinic is a hasty generalization.

Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question): An argument where the premise is simply a restatement of the conclusion in different words. For example: “Clean energy is essential because it is vital for our environment.” This provides no actual evidence; it merely restates the claim.

The Extreme Standpoint Fallacy: Authors rarely take absolute, uncompromising positions in standard academic or administrative passages. Options containing extreme qualifiers such as “all,” “never,” “always,” “only,” “entirely,” or “completely” are highly prone to being logically flawed and are usually incorrect in competitive exams unless explicitly backed by the passage.
