Geopolitical Risks and Sovereign Vulnerabilities

The global nature of the digital supply chain introduces significant geopolitical risks. Many components of the hardware and software supporting India’s digital ecosystem are sourced from global markets, creating potential supply chain vulnerabilities. If critical infrastructure relies on foreign-manufactured chips or proprietary software from adversarial nations, there is a latent risk of “backdoor” surveillance or remote-kill switches being embedded in the system.

Furthermore, as India exports its DPI model to other nations, it faces the challenge of digital diplomacy. By reducing dependence on global cloud service providers and fostering domestic Data Centers, India aims to create a “walled garden” for sensitive governmental and citizen data. This is supported by initiatives under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, which provides a legal framework for the processing and protection of digital data.
