India Commemorates One Year of Operation Sindoor; Focus on Advanced Defence and Counter-Terror Preparedness

India observed the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a major military campaign launched in 2025 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. The operation represented a significant transformation in India’s national security strategy, highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence, indigenous defence systems, and integrated military operations in counter-terror efforts.

Major Highlights

  • Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7, 2025, after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
  • The large-scale tri-service military action targeted nine terror infrastructure locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including facilities linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.
  • For the first time in a coordinated multi-domain mission, Indian armed forces employed advanced artificial intelligence systems along with loitering munitions to enhance surveillance, target identification, and precision strikes.
  • India’s Integrated Counter-drone Grid played a crucial role in defending strategic military sites by successfully intercepting retaliatory drone and missile attacks launched by Pakistan on May 8, 2025.
  • Under a revised security doctrine, Indian forces also targeted and disabled Pakistani air defence radar systems in Lahore, signaling a strategy of proportional response within the same operational domain.
  • As part of broader strategic measures, India suspended the implementation of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty until Pakistan permanently ends support for cross-border terrorism.
  • Following the operation, India introduced major military restructuring initiatives, including the formation of Rudra Brigades for rapid plains warfare and Bhairav units designed for specialized mountain combat in high-altitude regions.
  • The government accelerated defence modernization by approving the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft and an additional five S-400 missile defence systems.
  • India’s defence exports recorded a sharp rise of 62 percent, reaching ₹39,000 crore in the financial year 2025–26, largely due to international demand for indigenous defence technologies proven during the operation.
  • The four-day military confrontation officially ended with a ceasefire agreement on May 10, 2025, following direct communication between the military leadership of both countries.
