Trial Seaplane Operations Between Kochi and Lakshadweep Begin to Boost Connectivity

Trial seaplane services connecting Kochi with the Lakshadweep islands commenced on May 13, 2026, with the objective of improving regional connectivity, promoting tourism, and strengthening transport infrastructure in remote island regions. The initiative is considered important for enhancing access to ecologically sensitive areas while supporting the goals of the regional connectivity programme.

Major Highlights

  • Cochin International Airport Limited launched 12 trial seaplane operations to establish air-water connectivity between mainland India and several islands of Lakshadweep.
  • The trial operations are being conducted using a 20-seater Canadian Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter aircraft, which is specially designed for take-off and landing on water surfaces without requiring conventional runways.
  • Two main operational route clusters are being tested:
    • Kochi – Agatti – Kalpeni – Kavaratti
    • Kochi – Kadmat – Kiltan – Agatti
  • The service is operated by Skyhope Aviation Limited, which received its commercial Air Operator Certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in April 2026.
  • Multiple agencies, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the Lakshadweep Administration, and the Airports Authority of India, are jointly supervising the three-day trial exercise.
  • The seaplane service is expected to reduce travel time between Kochi and Lakshadweep to nearly one hour, compared to conventional sea travel that can take between 10 and 20 hours.
  • Initial ticket prices are estimated at around ₹12,000, although fares could reduce significantly to approximately ₹2,000–₹4,000 if the service is brought under the UDAN Scheme.
  • Safety arrangements include deployment of dedicated fire and rescue boats at island destinations to support emergency response during water-based aircraft operations.
  • The current initiative builds upon an earlier demonstration flight conducted in November 2024 between Bolgatty Marina in Kochi and Mattupetty Dam in Idukki district.
  • Apart from tourism promotion, the project is expected to improve emergency medical evacuation services and support sustainable economic development in the environmentally sensitive coral atoll ecosystem of Lakshadweep.

Important Terms

  • UDAN Scheme: A regional connectivity initiative of the Government of India aimed at making air travel affordable and improving access to underserved and remote areas.
  • Air Operator Certificate (AOC): An official approval issued by aviation authorities that permits an airline or operator to conduct commercial flight operations.
  • Twin Otter Aircraft: A versatile short take-off and landing aircraft widely used for operations in remote, island, and difficult terrain regions, including water-based aviation services.
