Think of an argument as a building; the premises are the foundation, and the conclusion is the roof.

A common trap for aspirants is assuming that the conclusion is always at the end of a paragraph. In competitive exams like UPSC CSAT, the conclusion can be embedded anywhere. Always ask yourself: “What is the author trying to convince me of?” Once you identify the author’s intent, it becomes much easier to identify whether a statement supports that intent (strengthening) or undermines it (weakening).

If a passage states, “All successful leaders are disciplined,” you can infer that “A person who is not disciplined cannot be a successful leader.” However, you cannot infer that “All disciplined people are successful leaders,” as that commits the fallacy of converse. Always stick to the boundaries of the text provided.
