India-Netherlands Strategic Partnership Strengthened During PM Modi’s Visit to The Hague

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten elevated India-Netherlands relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership during high-level talks held in The Hague on May 16, 2026. The visit resulted in the adoption of a comprehensive 2026–2030 Roadmap aimed at deepening cooperation in high technology, maritime security, green energy, and economic resilience.

  • India and the Netherlands formally upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership to enhance long-term cooperation across strategic sectors.
  • The two leaders jointly adopted the Roadmap for Strategic Partnership (2026–2030), which outlines a five-year framework for collaboration in political dialogue, emerging technologies, trade, sustainability, and defense cooperation.
  • A significant commercial agreement was announced between Tata Electronics and ASML to support India’s semiconductor fabrication facility being developed in Dholera, Gujarat.
  • Both countries signed a Letter of Intent for technical cooperation on Gujarat’s Kalpasar Project, with the Netherlands offering expertise in flood control, coastal engineering, and water management technologies.
  • During the visit, the Netherlands formally returned the historic Anaimangalam copper plates, a Chola-era inscription set dating back to the 11th century that had remained with Leiden University since 1862.
  • India and the Netherlands also launched a Strategic Roadmap on a Green and Digital Sea Corridor to promote sustainable maritime connectivity and facilitate exports of Indian green hydrogen to Europe.
  • A new annual Foreign Ministers’ dialogue mechanism was established to monitor implementation of the 2026–2030 roadmap and provide strategic direction for bilateral relations.
  • Defense cooperation was strengthened through a Letter of Intent on Defense Cooperation and discussions on a Defence Industrial Roadmap involving Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers and the Dutch defence industry association NIDV.
  • An MoU on critical minerals was signed between India’s Ministry of Mines and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support resilient and diversified global supply chains.
  • In total, the two countries finalized 17 agreements covering sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductor technology, space cooperation, sustainable agriculture, and food security.
